Shutter – Hollywood Thriller Remake

shutterremake

Now that I’m done with Shutter Thai thriller movie review , I’m moving on to another “Shutter” film. This time I’m gonna tackle the Hollywood remake of the movie. As expected, the film is peppered with typical hollywood treatment. Overall, the Shutter Hollywood remake is pretty much decent compared to other Asian Movie remakes.

SYNOPSIS
Benjamin and Jane Shaw relocates to the Metropolitan Tokyo on a job assignment. But before heading straight to Tokyo, the newlyweds decided to resume their short honeymoon up in the mountains. While driving on the way to their cabin, Jane accidentally runs over a woman crossing the street. As the car skids off the road, the couple lost consciousness. The couple finally recovers and called up the police. When they reached the cabin, they tried to put the ordeal behind them. Things started to go wrong when he first started his work assignment. The pictures he took got some fuzzy streaks to it including the fashion shoots. Jane started seeing the ghost of the woman. While Benjamin was busy working, Jane investigated the identity of the ghost that haunts her. Turns out that the ghost was Megumi, Benjamin’s former girlfriend. Will they finally put Megumi’s restless soul to rest before anyone gets hurt?

VERDICT
Initialy, I was skeptical about the hollywood remake version of the “Shutter” Thai movie. Undoubtedly, the remake version managed to be faithful to the original movie. Despite the lush settings and cinematography, the movie failed to build up the tension. The movie’s got to many things going on that it distracts you what the film is all about. For a moment I thought I was watching “Lost in Translation”. It’s hard to feel scared when there’s a musical cue that something sinister will happen. There’s one huge technical flaw in the film, that’s really hard to ignore. The part where Jane’s car skids off the road after hitting the woman and after they recovered from the crash, it was snowing. When they reached their honeymoon cabin, it wasn’t snowing anywhere in Japan. Overall, if you put aside the scare factor, the remake’s got great production value, nice cinematography and great looking casts.

Sadako Rating:
Fear Factor: 4 out of 10 – It’s a shame thought that the ghost wasn’t marginally scary. To be fair, there are some moments that was eerie. I’m bummed the supposedly “Climax” scene was shortened.
Violence and Gore: 4 out 10 – The original film was way more gorey compared to this one. Perfectly safe to watch with a family member with heart problem.
Nudity and Sex: 6 – Newlyweds just doing their typical thing, not to mention horny as hell ghost who wants a piece of action.
Replay value: After watching the film, I just had this urge to watch the original Shutter Thai film again. In a way, both Shutter films complement each other well.
