Spiderman director Sam Raimi brings you an all out scream fest film titled “Drag me to Hell”.
Christine Brown has a good job, a great boyfriend, and a bright future. But in three days, she’s going to hell.
The son of a mexican couple was haunted by evil forces. They sought the help of the local spirit medium named Shaun San Dena who lives in a mansion located in Pasadena California. San Dena asked the couple what did the boy do that made the spirits torment him. They told her that their boy stole a necklace from gypsies in town. However the owner of the necklace refused to accept as they tried to give it back since they have already cursed the boy. They went inside the house to prepare for the seance to save the boy. However the spirit of the Lamia was too powerful for San Dena to banish. She watched helplessly as the boy sank into the depths of hell. From that day San Dena vowed to herself that she will meet the Lamia again.
Fast forward to 40 years later, a loan officer named Christine was eyeing the “Assistant Manager” position of the bank. With annoying co-worker named Stu Rubin also competing for the same position, the manager has a tough time in choosing between the two. Christine’s horrifying ordeal starts when an old Gypsy woman was begging for a loan extension. She declines the old woman’s pleas for extension since she desperately wants to impress her boss. When she called for the security, the woman tries to attack her for shaming her. Relieved that the situation was well taken care of, Christine resume her routine. What she didn’t expect was that the old lady was stalking her at the parking lot and viciously attacks her. Before the old lady went away, she took a button from Christine’s jacket and cursed her to hell.
After reporting to the police about the vicious attacks, Christine thought that everything’s over. Unfortunately, she begins to sense that something’s following her. She decided to have her fortune read by a nearby psychic named Rham Jas despite her boyfriend’s protest. The psychic sensed the dark entity that’s following Christine and swiftly refunded the money. That evening, Christine was alone in the house when the dark spirit attacked her. Things started to go wrong since then, she had horrifying nosebleed at the office and started hallucinating. To her distress, she decided to consult the psychic again. Rham Jas told her that she’s been cursed that for three day she’ll be tormented by the Lamia before dragging her soul to hell. Time is running out for Christine as desperately do anything just to save her soul.
“Drag me to Hell” movie starts out well, you get attached to the characters which can be both good and a bad thing. I get so affected at the unexpected twist of the plot. Basically the theme of the film is about desperation. You can feel how Christine was so desperate enough to go beyond her norms just to save her soul. Unlike other horror films I’ve watched, “Drag me to Hell” was surprising endearing and has a whole lot of action.
I was initially intrigued at the poster of the movie and the marketing gimmick that a director of web spinnining superhero. I wasn’t aware that Sam Raimi was also the master behind Army of Darkness, I was too young that time and there’s no internet so excuse my ignorance. At first I’m pretty much distracted with Justin Long in the movie. He reminds me of the flamboyant gay character he played in “Zack and Miri”. Check out the discreet product placement of Apple since the guy Apple’s poster boy.
Just like Evil Dead and Army of Darkness, Raimi combines the horror and comedy. Watch out for various 80′s homage. I’m so attached to the kitten that looks exactly like our pet. When I got home after watching the movie, the first thing I did was check up on her.
Fear Factor: 9 out of 10 – This movie made me scream so many times that I’m so embarrassed.
Violence and Gore: 9 out of 10 – You can expect an all out gore fest the Sam Raimi way. Be sure that you’re not eating anything when watching it.
Nudity and Sex: 0 – Yup it’s surprisingly tame which is safe to watch with the whole family.
Replay value: Definitely a must watch when staying over at friend’s house on halloween
