Notorious Female SS Nazi Guards
The female nazi guards was notoriously cruel as their male counterparts. The women recruited mostly comes from low class and middle class families. The new recruits were subjected to both physically and mentally demanding training. Most of the women were strong, stout and well fed. Cruel treatment to prisoners were also part of their training. Nazi female personnels were regarded as equals by SS men. During their trials, these women vehemently claimed that they were only following orders. Ilse Koch – The Bitch of Buchenwald and The Witch of Buchenwal
One of the most cruel and most despised Female Nazi personnel, known as the infamous collector of Jewish inmates tattooed skin which was made into lampshade and handbag. Before joining the SS Nazi, she used to work as accounting clerk. Her rise to power was mainly attributed to her husband Karl Otto Koch who held a position of a commandant. As a wife of a commandant, Ilse Koch was bestowed with privileges and power to torture and abuse the inmates as she desires. Her husband Karl was credited for awakening her bloodthirsty side. Bored with the usual sadistic treatment towards prisoners, Ilse began to seek other thrills in form of sexual abuse. She had forced the inmates to rape each other as well as hit the prisoner’s private parts. Perhaps one of her notable crimes was that she scouts around the camp looking for prisoners with interesting tattoos. She then had inmates of interest killed in order for them to be skinned and be made into lampshades and handbag as part of her grisly collection. Allegedly, Ilse Koch proudly showed off her handbag made of human skin like a trophy.
Irma Grese – The Beautiful Beast
Irma Grese was a simple lass who whose occupation was a dairy helper before joining the Nazi female youth organization. She was the youngest female SS Nazi guard to be executed for war crimes. She was despised for her cruel treatment towards prisoners. Concentration camp survivors gave her the nickname “Beautiful Beast”. Armed with pistol and whip made of cellophane, she struts around in her heavy boots look for myriads of ways to torture and kill prisoners. One witness account states that Grese unleashes her savage half starved dogs upon the prisoners. At times, she would beat or whipped an inmate repeatedly to her death. One of her tasks included selecting prisoners to be sent to gas chambers. She was a notorious sadist who took great pleasures inflicting pain on prisoners. Concentration camp survivors testified that Irma Grese enjoyed indulging acts of fornication with both prisoners and Nazi personnels alike.
Dorothea “Thea” Binz
Dorothea Binz has trained female guards who eventually becomes cruel and ruthless. There was an incident where she chopped a Polish prisoner with an axe. During her time at the Ravensbrück, she continuously slapped, beaten and physically abused the female inmate. In fact, Binz and her SS officer lover Brauning enjoyed watching females inmated being beaten and flogged.
Juana Bormann – The Wiesel
Despite her petite stature, Juana Bormann was notoriously cruel female guard in Auschwitz. A former kitchen staff, she decided to join the staff of the Lichtenburg because it gives better wages. Noted for her cruelty by unleashing her wolfhound upon the prisoners, beating the sick female inmates furiously for not working and also had the better dressed female inmates stripped off their clothing. Bormann prefers to use rubber and wooden sticks to beat the inmates all over their bodies. One witness recalled that Juana had punched her in the face which knocked two of her teeth off and then had let her vicious dog attacked her friend which left her seriously injured that she died few days afterwards.
Elisabeth Volkenrath
Known as the overseer of hanging prisoners, she also took part in selecting prisoners for executions and sadistic cruelty. Not much is known about the life of Elisabeth Volkenrath aside from being a cruel SS Nazi supervisor in charge of selecting prisoners to the gas chambers.
Emma Zimmer
Despite the fact that most SS Nazi female guards were young and in fit of health, Emma Zimmer was an exception. She was already 54 when stayed as female overseer at Ravensbrück. When it comes to cruelty towards prisoners, she’s certainly not lagging behind her equally cruel peers. One of her duties include selecting prisoners for the gas chambers. It was not known what her were the grounds for her dismissal as January 1945 from her service as female nazi guard. It was either due to her old age or because of her alcoholism.
Wanda Klaff
Wanda Klaff was just a common housewife before she joined the Stutthof’s subcamp. Due to her status as an overseer, she easily learned the pleasures of sadistic tortures and abuse toward’s prisoners. At her trial for Nazi war crimes, she was proud of her intelligence and enjoys her routine of beating at least two prisoners everyday.
Elisabeth Lupka
Elizabeth Lupka used to be a laborer at an aircraft factory before she trained as SS Nazi camp guard at Ravensbrück. Later on she was reassigned to the Auchwitz-Birkenaue camp as an overseer. She was notorious for whipping and beating prisoners while selecting some of them to the gas chambers. Eventually she was one of the last people to stay at the camp until the evacuation from Auschwitz camp was completed. She even accompanied the death march before she went back to Ravensbrück and resumed her usual sadistic routine towards prisoners.
Ruth Elfriede Hildner
Ruth Hildner was one of the most feared SS Nazi guard stationed at the Helmbrechts. During the evacuation of camp, Hildner murdered several young female inmates during the death march as well as maltreatment of other prisoners. Her weapon of choice was her rod.
Jenny-Wanda Barkmann – The Beautiful Spectre
Jenny Barkmann was known as “The Beautiful Spectre” for her cruel treatment towards prisoners, her savage beatings results to deaths of her inmates. Part of her tasks includes selecting women and children for the gas chambers. Even during her incanceration, her coquettish nature still prevails that even during her trial she was seen fixing her hair and flirting with the prison guards.
Ewa Paradies
Despite being a protestant christian, Ewa Paradies unhesitantly commits depraved acts towards inmates and end up killing some of them. One witness recalls Paradies stripping the women inmates naked during winter, then she would pour ice cold water on them. If one of the inmates moved, she would viciously beat them .
Gerda Steinhoff
Gerda Steinhoff was a cook before she joined the camp staff at Stutthof. She left behind her husband and child to work as a Blockleiterin or Nazi guard in Stutthof women’s camp. She was known as a ruthless and cruel guard and was in charge of selection prisoners to the gas chambers.
Margot Dreschel
Margot Dreschel was described as bucked tooth, ugly, thin and vulgar woman by surviving inmates. She was notorious for brutal beatings on the inmates. Her tasks also includes selecting women and children to the gas chambers.
Ruth Neudeck
She was known as Ruth Closius before she got married. Her bloodthirsty ruthlessness has impressed her superiors that she was promptly promoted as an overseer. One of her most shocking act of brutality was that she cut an inmate’s throat with shovel. She did confessed to her crimes such as maltreatment of prisoners as well as cold blooded murders.

All through history women have been brutal and sadistic whenever they have had the power to be…which is often. In our society, we just turn a blind eye to womens cruelty. Women now gain power by playing the victim. Look at all the cheating, money wasting, messy, bitchy wives that through their husbands out of their homes with a mere accusation of…”yelling at me”….or even looking at me in a menacing way. Women are generally not as savage as men. There are exceptions, of course. But testosterone pushes men to fight. I disagree that “we turn a blind eye to their cruelty.” There are many women in prison. I don’t think that’s glossing it over. Since 1980, the amount of women in prison has tripled. Drugs is the most common arrest charge. No doubt women can be cruel, but men have been running the world for all this time, and there is ALWAYS at least one war going on, and MOST of the time, the combatants are men.

That period in history is thankfully over. These crazed guards were caught up in the percieved righteousness of the persecution of innocents, they were praised by their superiors and thrived on that. It was the only time they felt worthy as they must have had to hate themselves subconciously before they could be so brutal to others. They were a product of their time and circumstances. I often dream of inflicting retrospective retribution on the perpetrators of such evil acts but i know this is an unhealthy emotion and solves nothing. Cruelty is an unfortunate part of the human psyche, as is a morbid fascination with the horrific acts of others.

The psychology of these women is what is interesting. The female camp guards were uneducated, from humble backgrounds, and found that their new jobs—as slave camp and death camp supervisors—gave them some sort of status for the first time in their lives. We encounter women like this every day in America, women from the bottom of the socio-economic order who work in low-level jobs in which they are granted some limited powers over persons who would otherwise never associate with them. Everyone recognizes this “type” in an instant. We see them in school systems, in court houses, at the Department of Motor Vehicles. They often delight in their new-found authority over persons who otherwise would not give them the time of day. These women are generally of low intelligence, overweight, unattractive and abusive—and often evince qualities of the sociopath and psychopath.
As a practicing attorney, I have been called upon, frequently, to deal with modern-day recreations of this type. In fact, once I had to deal with a ghastly women who was a dead ringer for the original Ilse Koch—and this modern-day Ilse Koch was even called “the Bitch of Buchenwald” by persons who knew her. I have never forgotten it.
In a homeowner association in Fairfax County, Virginia, right outside of Washington, D.C., the local property manager IS Ilse Koch. She looks like Ilse Koch, she acts like Ilse Koch. She has been openly known to Sully II residents as “The Bitch Of Buchenwald” for twenty years. The property manager must be a clone of Ilse Koch—she even dresses inappropriately and provocatively, as did Koch.
Some time ago, I represented a Sully II client in which this modern-day Ilse Koch showed up at a hearing wearing a body-hugging gray T-shirt without undergarments, exposing her nipples, which were disfigured. It was unbelievable. It was revolting. It was sickening. The first thing that came to mind the minute I saw this pig-faced woman was “The people who live in Sully II are right—this woman IS the Bitch Of Buchenwald. Ilse Koch has been reincarnated”.
So we must be careful not to attribute the existence of such appalling women to Germany, or to particular times and events.
Such women are still with us. They are everywhere, in all cultures, in all societies.
